This back-to-school season is certainly like no other we have experienced previously. Schools and families are juggling options for their children, decisions over opening schools, continued remote learning, changing school schedules, and consideration for the impact on children’s safety and education. With all of the uncertainty that's happening, one thing we at Reading Is Fundamental know is true is that if you give a child a book to read, they are more likely to become a proficient reader.

Wherever children and schools are this year, whether in a classroom or remote learning, RIF is committed to providing the books and resources that ensure all children have the ability to read. We are working closely with schools and local organizations across the country to provide books to children in whatever way we can to meet the needs of their students.

5 Must-Have Reading Tools for Back-to-School

RIF recognizes that back-to-school this fall poses new challenges for educators and families. Our reading tools, book-based activities, and digital resources are all designed to support the needs of educators and families as we begin the new school year.

  1. Boost confidence about heading back to school with some favorite books with reading activities about school, teachers, and classmates in RIF's Back-to-School Collection and Be Your Best You Collection.
  2. Inspire literacy at home or in the classroom using RIF's Interactive Literacy Calendars. These printable calendars link each day of the year to a relevant book with engaging supplemental activities.
  3. Explore our Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) Center for book recommendations and book-based activities focused around feelings, friendship, fairness, and focus.
  4. Skybrary, RIF's digital library, hosts nearly 1,000 interactive children's eBooks for home or school. Each book features an optional read-to-me narration and Big Thinker questions to encourage comprehension. Sign up and begin your free 30 day trial.
  5. RIF's reading resources can help encourage at-home learning. Find reading logs, book bingo, and reading challenges on our Learn at Home Resources page so children can list, track and share their reading progress.

RIF and Macy's Innovative Response to COVID-19

No one could have predicted the profound effects the COVID-19 pandemic has had on everyday life. In response to the pandemic, RIF shifted to meeting the needs of children and parents faced with the challenge of learning at home. Thanks to the support of committed partners like Macy’s, RIF quickly adapted by creating new resources and opportunities to help educators, children, and families transition to remote learning, by getting books to children who are out of school. Read about RIF and Macy’s innovation response to the COVID-19 pandemic here.

Support RIF's Back-to-School Drive

RIF is committed to providing books and literacy resources to at-risk youth, including communities where the COVID-19 pandemic disproportionately impacts children. For this reason, RIF is launching a Back-to-School Drive aimed at getting books and digital resources to one million children wherever school may be this year. Donate today and every dollar will be matched up to $40,000.
